- OPENING NIGHT: On a Wire
Mark-Anthony Turnage: Scherzoid [West Coast Premiere]
Jennifer Higdon: On a Wire [eighth blackbird ] [West Coast Premiere]
Michael Hersch: Symphony No. 3 [World Premiere, Festival Commission]
One World Premiere, two West Coast Premieres, and three composers-in-residence usher us into the Festival's 48th anniversary season. Maestra Marin Alsop leads her award-winning Festival Orchestra in the West Coast Premiere of British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Scherzoid. One of the most admired and widely performed composers of his generation, Turnage is known for his skillful blend of classical and jazz idioms. Scherzoid has been described as “a kaleidoscopic riot of blue-hued harmonies and silvery tuned percussion...” The spotlight then turns to the West Coast Premiere of a concerto for sextet and orchestra titled, On a Wire, written by 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon expressly for the acclaimed new music ensemble eighth blackbird. CityBeat raves that eighth blackbird's "sheer exuberance and affection for the music is as much a draw as the music itself." The evening concludes with the World Premiere of Michael Hersch’s Symphony No. 3. The Financial Times of London describes Hersch as "... one of the most fertile musical minds to emerge in the U.S. over the past generation." Festival audiences will fondly remember the premieres of Hersch's first and second highly acclaimed symphonies. After waiting almost ten years to return to composing for full orchestra, Hersch wanted his next symphony to be premiered by Marin and her Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. His return is a long awaited homecoming for a highly anticipated Festival commission. You can count on another Opening Night that puts you at the center of the creative process and brings the art of new music to stunning realization.
(The 2010 opening night begins with an outdoor Pre-Concert Talk by Marin Alsop and a special ticketed dinner prepared by Feast for a King and served alfresco at the Civic Auditorium. Reservations required.)

- Rewind
Anna Clyne: <<rewind<< [West Coast Premiere]
Jennifer Higdon: Percussion Concerto [Colin Currie, percussion]
Mark-Anthony Turnage: Chicago Remains [West Coast Premiere]
Mark-Anthony Turnage: Drowned Out [West Coast Premiere]
The Festival picks up speed Saturday night with a newcomer, 30-year-old London-born Anna Clyne, and the West Coast Premiere of her <<rewind<<. A composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, Clyne wrote this piece for the New York City-based Hysterica Dance Company, taking as her inspiration the image of analog videotape scrolling backwards with moments of skipping, warping, and freezing. The New York Times praised its “patterned rhythms and sensual orchestration,” adding that its author represents “no hype, just hard work, and young talent.” Scottish percussionist Colin Currie made his U.S. debut at the Festival when he was only 19 years old, and in this third visit to the Festival returns as soloist in Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto, winner of the 2010 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Higdon composed the challenging piece especially for Currie, an artist known for "his charisma as well as impeccable technique." Of his East Coast performance of the work, The Washington Post exclaimed, "Colin Currie ran lithely about the stage, summoning whispering arpeggiations from the marimba, icy chimes from the xylophone and a wild 'battle-of-the-bands' drum solo toward the finale." Then Maestra Alsop will lead the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in the West Coast Premieres of two major works by Mark-Anthony Turnage: Chicago Remains, a celebrated piece inspired by the Windy City and which, according to The Chicago Tribune, “captures the true grit of our town;” and Drowned Out, a work which stemmed from Turnage’s four-year period as Composer-in-Association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, and was inspired by Lord of the Ring's author William Golding's later novel Pincher Martin.
(A Talkback Session with Marin Alsop, guest artists, and composers follows the concert.)

- In the Blue Room with eighth blackbird and Kronos Quartet
Tonight, for the very first time, these two pioneering ensembles will share the concert stage, performing programs that make crystal clear why they stand boldly at the forefront of new music.
For more than 30 years, the Kronos Quartet—David Harrington, John Sherba (violins), Hank Dutt (viola) and Jeffrey Zeigler (cello)—has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to expanding the range and context of the string quartet. In the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide (including many at the Cabrillo Festival!), releasing more than 45 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world's most eclectic composers and performers, and commissioning more than 650 works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos' work has garnered numerous awards, including a 2004 GRAMMY for Best Chamber Music Performance and Musical America's 2003 Musician of the Year.
eighth blackbird tackles the sound-world of new music with comfort, conviction and infectious enthusiasm. The sextet—Matt Albert (violin & viola), Matthew Duvall (percussion), Lisa Kaplan (piano), Michael Maccaferri (clarinets), Tim Munro (flutes), and Nicholas Photinos (cello)—took flight almost 15 years ago and now attracts fans of all ages to its concerts and recordings. Widely lauded for a distinctive performing style—often playing from memory with theatrical flair—the ensemble's "performances are the picture of polish and precision" (New York Times). eighth blackbird has earned critical acclaim, performances and residencies across the world, the 2008 GRAMMY for Best Chamber Music Performance, and its debut appearance at the Cabrillo Festival tonight!

- Free Family Concert
Petting Zoo-Style Tour of the Orchestra
Nathaniel Stookey: The Composer is Dead (narrator, Nathaniel Stookey)
The Cabrillo Festival hosts its annual Free Family Concert on Sunday, August 8 at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. The Cabrillo Festival’s Free Family Concerts have become legendary—a staple in the musical education and upbringing of area youngsters, and a no less entertaining and engaging experience for their parents. It begins, once again, with the popular petting zoo-style Tour of the Orchestra so kids make an up-close and personal connection to the different instruments and players. This year Nathaniel Stookey’s “tartly funny” The Composer is Dead, written for narrator and orchestra, will be performed. Composer Stookey (who is NOT dead) will narrate the work, a libretto written by Lemony Snicket (San Francisco-based writer Daniel Handler). It’s a murder mystery about the killing of a composer. Like Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and Benjamin Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Stookey's The Composer Is Dead is intended to introduce young audiences to the instruments in the orchestra, though with a dash or two of irony thrown in.

- SUMMER PROGRAMS AT AUX 3 POMMES
SUMMER PROGRAMS AT AUX 3 POMMES, CA:
June 21st - August 16th
The camps will be for one week each from June 21st till August 15th from 9:30 am till 12:30 pm. They will each be an intensive language program in French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin and German (other languages can be added, again based on demand) that was developed at our sister school's in CT. Each camp will have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 students. The kids will get ready to visit different countries (virtually of course) where the language they chose is spoken, they will prepare their luggage, get their passports and boarding passes, and fly to countries where the language is spoken. We will use Google Earth to show them landmarks of the countries they are visiting. During their journey, the children listen to indigenous music, learn about the local fauna, enjoy authentic snacks and engage in art and crafts representative of the regions visited.. We will spend 2 hours at the school and 1 hour in the park area in front of Louden Nelson where we will do more physical activities (photo safaris etc...).
Why choose our programs:
• Multi-sensory, interactive approach
• Full immersion (no English in the classroom)
• Customized curriculum for both adults and children
• Small teacher to student ratio (classes 2-6 students)
• Faster learning curve than other formal approaches
• Convenient location in downtown Santa Cruz
• Flexible schedule
• Drop off for grade school students and up
• Summer camps (week long intensive programs) for children
Aux 3 Pommes, CA encourages a love of foreign languages through games, songs, drama, videos, and hands-on projects. The various activities also introduce students to the culture behind the language. The target language is spoken throughout the sessions, to enable young students to get the level of comfort they need to begin to express themselves.

- GARY SHTEYNGART in discussion with RICK KLEFFEL Super Sad True Love Story
Gary Shteyngart is one of our staff’s favorite authors. Edgy, pristine, funny, and simultaneously, heart-felt, each of his novels have landed themselves in our newsletters and onto our staff favorite shelves, and Shteyngart’s new novel, Super Sad True Love Story, only confirms our admiration. In what critics are calling the 1984 for our current generation, Super Sad True Love Story, envisions a deliciously dark tale of America's dysfunctional coming years--and the timeless and tender feelings that just might bring us back from the brink. A love story set in the near future (think next week) this book explores how falling in love just may redeem a planet falling apart. If that doesn’t sell you on coming to this event, what if we add that Santa Cruz’s own Rick Kleffel will be here in discussion with Gary? Rick will be facilitating the reading and asking just the right questions to get even more from this already fantastically funny and zany author. Rick is the host of The Agony Column, an hour of literary and theatrical talk Sundays on KUSP, 88.9 FM, and nationally broadcast NPR syndications where Rick Kleffel is one of the most listened to and requested literary interviewers out there. Please join us for what is sure to be a terrific event!

- Music, Art, Food and Wine Festival
Saturday and Sunday, August 7th and 8th, see the return of the popular Cabrillo Music Art & Wine Festival.
Celebrating its nineteenth year, the “festival within the Festival” offers two full days of summertime fun when fine artists, craft vendors, food artisans and Santa Cruz wineries take to the street with their treasures and wares. Festival-goers who appreciate the beautiful and the unique will have the opportunity to view and purchase a wealth of jewelry and textile designs, art glass, watercolors, handmade candles and soaps, photography and everything in between.
The Festival continues its tribute to Santa Cruz County's grape-growing region featuring six premier area wineries featuring locally-crafted wines. Winetasters may stroll along the rows of colorful booths or dance in the aisles to the non-stop beat of local world and ethnic music.
Throughout the weekend, Santa Cruz County's finest musicians will offer Taiko drumming, Mariachi music along with Salsa Rueda Santa Cruz, and many more on the outdoor Church Street Stage. Come kick up your heels or simply relax and enjoy these multi-talented local musicans.
On Sunday, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre and Motion Pacific Dance Junction's hip-hop dancers take to the outdoor stage. All outside performances and a free family concert are free. The Free Family Concert on Sunday at 1:00pm will feature a "petting zoo-style" tour of the award-winning Festival Orchestra. You will not want to miss the opportunity to share with your family the ability to be up close with these musicians and their demonstrations.
For those who savor the delights of exotic and regional cuisine, a world menu awaits. Festival patrons will be able to choose selections from such realms at the Middle East, and past Festival favorites, the ladies of the Prophet Elias Orthodox Church, will once again hold sway with their famed Greek confections. Coffee, of course, in all its gourmet incarnations will be available along with other non-alcoholic drinks.
Don't forget the "Creativity Tent for Kids," where young participants will experience free hands-on music and visual art workshops when professional artists share their techniques and infectious love of the arts.
It's the quintessential "Santa Cruz" festival!

- Curtis Brothers
Jazz is a revolutionary art form. And perhaps, no other group represents and approaches that statement more fearlessly than the Curtis Brothers. Keeping Latin Jazz alive and vital with a fresh and new perspective, Zaccai (piano) and Luques Curtis (bass), along with fellow soul and band mates Reinaldo DeJesus (congas), Richie Barshay (drums), Giovanni Almonte (vocals) continue to forge ahead into new territories using original compositions and arrangements within the jazz and Latin idioms. While influenced by Puerto Rican and Cuban rhythms, their music is uniquely their own and speaks for itself featuring an inventive, fresh sound that never lacks depth or emotion while still staying true to its roots.
Their latest release, Blood•Spirit•Land•Water•Freedom, which represents key components to our physical and metaphysical experience and (relative) reality, was recently given 4 stars by Downbeat Magazine. They were awarded the best Latin Jazz album for an up-and-coming artist in 2009 and they have also received a nomination for a 2009 Independent Music Award and Best Latin Jazz Album of the year from The Latin Jazz Corner. Displaying the synergistic qualities of a group that have been together for over years, the Curtis Brothers have worked and performed with such luminaries as Danilo Perez, Eddie Palmieri, Ralph Peterson and Christian Scott to name a few. Although innovative, the Curtis Brothers are interested in and preserving the essence of jazz itself and remain and accessible. If you are someone that enjoys everything from Tito Puente to John Coltrane, this is show no to be missed.

- John Pizzarelli
“the genial genius of the guitar” – Toronto Star
Singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli, a master in the art of reinventing jazz classics, celebrates the music of Duke Ellington, undeniably one of the most prominent musical icons of the 20th century with his new release and tour: Rockin’ In Rhythm: A Tribute to Duke Ellington. The new release combines the enduring work of Duke Ellington with John Pizzarelli’s incredible ability to reinterpret the Great American Songbook.
Pizzarelli was still a very young musician when Ellington died in May 1974, but thanks to his father – veteran guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli – he would eventually learn much about jazz’s most important composer. “Duke’s music was an integral part of any set my father played,” says Pizzarelli. “I heard a tremendous amount of his music listening to my Dad and then through performing with him. There are some many beautiful melodies and so many discoveries to be made on any given night."
Rockin’ In Rhythm is the follow up to Pizzarelli’s critically-acclaimed 2008 release, With A Song In My Heart – John Pizzarelli Sings the Music of Richard Rodgers, which featured Sebesky’s GRAMMY® nominated arrangement of “Johnny One Note.”
In 2009, Pizzarelli won the Montreal Jazz Festival’s prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Award, conferred in recognition of the versatility, improvisational originality and quality of repertoire of a jazz singer renowned on the international scene.
Fans in the know need no convincing; everyone else need only witness this intimate performance to understand why the Boston Globe credits John Pizzarelli with singlehandedly “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.”

- The Le Boeuf Brothers
Now based in New York, the Le Boeuf Brothers have always remained loyal to their Santa Cruz roots. Always a crowd favorite, the Le Boeuf's will be making a much anticipated appearance at Kuumbwa Jazz kicking off an international tour. Remy (saxophone) and Pascal (piano) are prodigiously talented identical twins who possess an uncanny ability to communicate with each other, both on and off stage. Bringing youthful energy along open minds and innovative, inventive ideas, these two are constantly absorbing new material from a wide range of influences to create a sound that is characterized by odd time signatures and a compelling blend of current harmonic ideas.
Their style is mainly modern, straight-ahead jazz, yet both brothers proclaim influences as disparate as Radiohead and Claude Debussy making for a vital, fresh sound that is uniquely their own. Having already received awards for their composition and playing ability, and likely many more to come, the twins display genuine emotion and originality that is often absent from many other young jazz musicians. This wonderful blend of qualities can be heard on their 2009 release “House without a Door.”
Communicating these ideas to each other and audiences alike is crucial to all jazz musicians. As the twins have this area covered, it allows them to concentrate on exploring and being intimately involved in the music itself, virtually assuring an unforgettable evening of spontaneous creativity. Providing the critically important foundation along with the equally essential musical contributions to the conversation are drummer Michael Davis and bassist Martin Nevin.

- Taylor Eigsti Quartet
“…the most amazing talent I've ever come across. Remember him." – Dave Brubeck
At 25, Menlo Park native Taylor Eigsti has already worked with a laundry list of jazz legends. He’s also had quite a bit of experience outside the idiom, most notably as the featured pianist behind numerous classical and operatic symphonies. A prodigy in the truest sense, his professional career officially began at tender age of eight. Not so many years later, he released the first of six recordings as leader; two of these have earned Grammy nominations.
Taylor incoroprates elements of funk, rock and R&B into a textural style that he refers to as “rhythm piano.” Armed with more than ample chops to execute this approach within any format, he generally splits his efforts between original compositions and standards (the latter of which might be recognizable only by an occasional thematic quote.) Nevertheless, the trio is where his finest inspirations take flight. The addition of guest vocalist Becca Stevens make this appearance, which features Harish Raghavan (bass) and Eric Harland (drums) an especially intriguing event. Prepare to be dazzled by a refreshing array of new material from Eigsti’s soon to be released Daylight at Midnight (Concord Jazz, August 2010).

- Jim Bourne
"Urban Monochrome Urban Pentimento"
Based on the Central Coast of California, Jim Bourne has been involved with photography for more than forty years and, after a career in the software industry, has been concentrating on it for over a decade. Favorite subjects include birds and other wildlife, the natural landscape, the sights of the world around us, and musicians in concert.
On display at Stripe Design is a recent series of urban black and white images, including a number of buildings in Portland that have a contemporary function, but retain faint, painted traces of what they once were. The series-which now includes images from San Francisco, Oakland, St. Louis, and Santa Cruz-plays off of textures, contrasts, and juxtapositions to capture the intrinsic visual impact of the everyday.
Jim's travels have taken him (and his camera) to many places throughout California, the continental US and Hawaii, as well as to the Galápagos, Costa Rica, and Europe. Close to home, he has the many riches of the Monterey Bay area, San Francisco and points north, and Yosemite Valley to the east.
In addition to photography, Jim has been involved in radio for over four decades, working as a jazz broadcaster on both coasts. Currently he is the host of Just a Taste, which airs on KRML Saturday mornings at 10:00.
Jim has exhibited his work at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz and at other local venues. One of his images appears on the cover of pianist Biff Smith's solo CD, and his work is represented on several web sites, including the bands Along Came Betty and Red Beans and Rice. He has also provided photographic services to the Santa Cruz Public Library on several occasions and has photographed weddings and various gatherings.
