- Trunk Show, CONNIE ANTHON, FASHION DESIGNER TURNED JEWELER
Jewelry designer Connie Anthon is the creator behind three popular jewelry lines. After spending 25 years as a fashion designer she found she enjoyed working with precious metals and stones more so she began a second career in jewelry and never looked back. Greatly influenced by her world traveling, art dealer grandmother, Evelyn Knight, she was encouraged to “Do what you love and you will be successful.” Connie named her first jewelry line after her grandmother, which features semi precious stones, freshwater pearls and cubic zirconium set in 22K plated matte gold and imitation rhodium handmade in San Francisco. Always a big hit with Annieglass customers, Connie will be bringing all her jewelry collections to a trunk show just in time for Valentine’s Day. The other two collections are called C. Anthon, a sterling silver jewelry line and Tatto, one-of-a-kind pieces made of antique jewelry the designer takes apart and reassembles using semi-precious stones and “lots and lots of pearls” set with sterling silver, gold vermeil and 18K gold.
Connie’s grandmother Evelyn Knight, was way ahead of her time in many things, particularly women and careers. To honor their inspiration, the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce Women in Business scholarship program seems a particularly appropriate beneficiary. A portion of the proceeds of this trunk show on Feb. 12 from 3-8pm at the Annieglass store in downtown Santa Cruz will go to the scholarship program supporting young women’s professional pursuits.

“Morgan virtually defined the hard bop sound” – Blue Note Records
On perhaps the most tragic nights in jazz history, Lee Morgan met his untimely death at just 33 years of age. Nevertheless, his abbreviated career saw Morgan altering the course of musical evolution with the likes of John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Art Blakey, Bobby Timmons and Wayne Shorter. As a bandleader, he made seminal contributions to hard bop, free jazz and modal forms, and inadvertently introduced R&B backbeats to instigate a tangent known as soul-jazz. This all-star tribute features artists whose resumes include tenures in Morgan’s band. Indeed, Billy Harper, Benny Maupin, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Geri Allen, Dwayne Burno and Billy Hart add up to a septet that does the man proud.
Coming up in Philadelphia, Lee Morgan was exposed to hometown notables like Benny Golson, John Coltrane and the Heath Brothers from a very young age. He took up the trumpet, and was leading his own group by the time he was fifteen. Just out of high school, he got an opportunity to perform with Art Blakey. After working as an official Jazz Messenger for two short weeks, he was scooped up to replace Joe Gordon in Dizzy Gillespie’s big band. Viewed by many as an heir-apparent to the legacy of Clifford Brown, Morgan signed with Blue Note Records and released six dates as leader over a period of little more than a year.

- Loudon Wainwright III
Tickets:$23/Adv $26/Door
“he has not only retained his sharpness of wit but has also learned to cut with greater skill.” The New Yorker
Singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright III earned his stripes playing rebellious folk songs teeming with off-color humor and crafty musicianship. With a resume that encompasses four decades, in just about every aspect of the business, he’s had more than his share of top 40 hits, film scores and high-profile admirers. While Wainwright often performs with the support of a back-up quartet he affectionately refers to as his “wrecking crew”, a guitar and a stage are all he needs to really shine.
His clever songwriting about such honest subject matter landed him a contract with Atlantic records. His debut self-titled release hit the shelves in 1970, but he remained essentially off-the-radar until two years later. A small-time hit single with an unlikely title (Dead Skunk) marked his first contribution to mainstream radio playlists; each subsequent release drew increasing acclaim.
Within a few years, Loudon Wainwright was more or less a household name. His quirky, quick-witted persona was enlisted to portray “singing surgeon” Calvin Spaulding on 3 episodes of the hit TV series M*A*S*H. Since then, he has performed soundtracks for and appeared in a number of films, including Big Fish, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Elizabethtown. In his ever-increasing catalog of records, three have earned the honor of Grammy nomination. Wainwright’s music has been interpreted by high-profile admirers ranging from Johnny Cash to power-pop combo Big Star.
While Loudon is often backed by Greg Leisz, Patrick Warren, David Piltch and Jay Bellerose on guitar, keys, bass and drums, respectively, he’s truly in his element on an empty stage. This solo appearance will feature re-envisioned classics from the early years. And with any luck, Loudon might also dig into old-time chestnuts from a brand new Grammy-nominated release (“best traditional folk album”) entitled High, Wide and Handsome: the Charlie Poole Project (2nd Story Sound, 2009.)

“one of this country's enduring treasures” - CNN
Vocalist Patty Cathcart and guitarist Tuck Andress met by chance, at an audition in the late 1970’s. Three decades and fourteen albums later, they endure as the sole occupants of an extraordinary niche on the fringes of popular music and jazz. With an encyclopedic repertoire of originals, standards and reinterpreted rock-n-roll classics, every Tuck and Patti performance is a unique, spontaneous occasion without so much as a planned set list.
For a decade, the two played in what Cathcart describes as “hundreds of different bands and aggregations”, until a fateful audition in San Francisco. Andress, already a band member, recalls that Patti “walked in, said hi, passed out her charts (Horace Silver’s ‘Out Of The Night Came You’) and we started playing the song.” Almost instantaneously, he knew he had found his musical soul-mate. Cathcart has a similar recollection; although unimpressed with the band as a whole, she quickly resolved to “steal the guy playing guitar in the corner.” The two remained with the group for a few months, meanwhile car-pooling to rehearsals, becoming the best of friends and plotting an escape to their own ensemble.
Remarkably, Tuck and Patti grew to be a local and eventually international sensation. And rightly so- in this duo’s able hands, no composition ever comes out the same way twice. They decided early on that the freshest tune is, by necessity, a perpetual work in progress. And no band of any size so sincerely interprets love songs; come prepared for an evening of romantic revelry that will literally sweep you off your feet.

- Vault Scavenger Hunt
Vault Gallery Hides a $12,000 Diamond Ring In Santa Cruz! Local couples will run around Santa Cruz to solve clues to find hidden treasure using their cell phones.
1.28.09 (Santa Cruz, CA) – There is a $12,000 Diamond Ring somewhere in the streets of downtown Santa Cruz. No, it’s not missing, it hasn’t been stolen and no one left it there by accident. In fact, Vault Gallery has purposefully placed (well, hidden) it there and is hoping for some lucky couple to find (and keep) it. In conjunction with SCVNGR, INC., Vault Gallery is turning Santa Cruz into a city-wide game-board and has built a high-tech treasure hunt for couples to try and seek out the diamond!
But, there’s a catch. To participate in the game, couples had to submit their love stories to Vault Gallery at www.vaultdiamonddash.com. The best stories are being hand-picked by the folks at Vault Gallery and offered a spot to participate in the city-wide game on Saturday, February 13th. (Signups are still open, so send in your stories!)
This game is not your average treasure hunt, it’s a fully interactive high-tech twist on the old favorite pastime, the scavenger hunt. All of the clues and challenges are delivered to teams’ mobile phones via text message. With interactive game commands and an intelligent routing algorithm called SmartRoute, you’ve got a high-tech real-world game that’s unlike anything Santa Cruz has seen before.
For more information and to submit your love story to win a spot, visit www.vaultdiamonddash.com.

- 8 Tens @ Eight Festival
Returning to Actors’ Theatre for its 15th annual season, the hugely popular 8 Tens @ Eight festival of 10 minutes plays opens January 15th 2009 for a five week run ending on February 14th.
Regarded as the opening of the Santa Cruz theatre season, the festival highlights the work of eight different playwrights in eight short plays. Under the artistic directorship of local actor, director and playwright, Brian Spencer, this year’s festival promises a mixture of light and heavy theatrical fare to please a diverse audience. It features the work of several local playwrights as well as the work of writers from as far away as Wichita, Kansas. The works represent a range of styles and subjects from stark realism to existential; from edgy comedy to deep drama.
Local or nearby playwrights are represented by: Robert Clem from San Jose offering Tethered a father/son character study to be directed by Gerry Gerringer; Earl T. Roske, also from San Jose, returns to the festival after last year’s ‘The Duel’, with Some Are Meant to Sit, an existential piece on class and envy, to be directed by Helene Simkin Jara; Doug Brook, again from San Jose, presenting The Case of the Cereal Killer a comedy about a rather clueless father, to be directed by Shara Free; The Saw Player by Richard M. Bennett of Santa Cruz not only has a local author but also concerns the creation of the local iconic sculpture of Tom Scribner, to be directed by Davis Banta; and local Santa Cruz playwright, actor and director, Ian McRae’s raw Before the Crash will be directed by Andrew Stewart.
All performances at Actors’ Theatre, 1001 Center St., Santa Cruz.
Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 8PM and Sundays at 3PM.
Tickets are $18 general; $15 students/seniors; and two for $25 all Thursdays and Sundays.
Buy tickets at the theatre box office one hour before show times. To make a reservation, call 831.425.PLAY (831.425.7529). You can also purchase tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com. Visit Actors’ Theatre website at www.santacruzactorstheatre.org |

- Bookshop Santa Cruz’s Community Book Group: My Stroke of Insight
Led by Julie Minnis with a discussion with Prof. Bruce Bridgeman
Book Choice: My Stroke of Insight—by Jill Taylor
* please note 7:00pm start time of this event
------------------------------------------------------
We are celebrating our third year of Community Book Groups—a monthly Book Group that is open to everyone in the community. While we’ll continue to honor titles written by local authors in our area, we thought we would also celebrate the amazing minds of our community. With art, thought and culture, being Santa Cruz ’s backbone, we decided to bring some of that creativity and smarts into our Book Group as well. To start the idea off, we’ll literally be talking about what sparks ideas in the first place—brains—with the help of UCSC’s neuroscientist Bruce Bridgeman.
Bookshop’s next community selection will be Jill Taylor’s, My Stroke of Insight. At 37, Taylor , a Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours, Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover. For Taylor , her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by "stepping to the right" of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by "brain chatter." A beautiful personal account of brain science, this is a memoir that will leave you touched and curious.
To help with that curiosity, our Community Book Group will feature a discussion about the book at 7:00 pm facilitated by Julie Minnis, followed by a dialogue with local neuroscientist Professor Bruce Bridgeman at 7:30pm. My Stroke of Insight will be discounted to the whole community at 10% off its cover price from Tuesday, January 12th until the February 10th meeting date (for those last minute readers!). We hope you’ll join us.
PS—There will be snacks and tea!!

- MARISA MELTZER: Girl Power
Meltzer’s began her book Girl Power as a single article in Slate Magazine years ago when she spoke to the greater loss that women felt when the band Sleater-Kinney broke up. At the time, her article generated a tremendous reader response and inspired Meltzer to take a deeper look at the role of women in music and the situation they face today, and so the title Girl Power was born.
The nineties were a boom time for women in all genres of music. It was a time when underground met the mainstream: riot grrrls wearing kilts and playing in all-girl punk bands, rock musicians like Courtney Love and Liz Phair writing songs about sex, the Spice Girls’ pop domination while assuring girls that they could—and should—kick ass. It was Lilith Fair and Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos.
Meltzer writes, “Girl power recognizes that not everything is pure: it delights in ambiguous gray areas. It’s not just about testing out your own relationship to feminism, but about finding your identity in the world. But girl power’s ‘do-it-yourself’ message of ‘You can do anything ‘is a powerful entrée to feminism, especially because its simplicity brings in the very young . . . Girl power is a way station, not an endpoint, and a gateway, I hope to a more profound equality of the sexes.”
Interspersing her own personal accounts with interviews with some of the most powerful voices in women’s music, from The Indigo Girls to the Spice Girls, Meltzer gives us a powerful account to the importance of women in music.
Marisa Meltzer is the co-author of How Sassy Changed My Life. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York magazine, Salon, Slate, and SPIN. As a one time Santa Cruz resident, Bookshop Santa Cruz is proud to welcome her back to the area to honor her book.

- TIMOTHY FERRIS: The Science of Liberty
Timothy Ferris, a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominee, and author of the acclaimed Coming of Age in the Milky Way, has published a new book, The Science of Liberty, a brilliant chronicle of how science sparked the spread of liberal democracy across the modern world. In his most important book to date, award-winning author Timothy Ferris—"the best popular science writer in the English language today" (Christian Science Monitor)—makes a passionate case for science as the inspiration behind the rise of liberalism and democracy. Ferris argues that just as the scientific revolution rescued billions from poverty, fear, hunger, and disease, the Enlight-enment values it inspired has swelled the number of persons living in free and democratic societies from less than 1 percent of the world population four centuries ago to more than a third today.
Ferris deftly investigates the evolution of these scientific and political revolutions, demonstrating that they are inextricably bound. He shows how science was integral to the American Revolution but misinterpreted in the French Revolution; reflects on the history of liberalism, stressing its widely underestimated and mutually beneficial relationship with science; and surveys the forces that have opposed science and liberalism—from communism and fascism to postmodernism and Islamic fundamentalism.
A sweeping intellectual history, The Science of Liberty is a stunningly original work that transcends the antiquated concepts of left and right.
Please help up welcome Mr. Ferris for a reading, signing, and Q&A, on what is sure to be an insightful and interesting night.

- New Work by Robynn Smith
Robynn Smith's new work combines her interest and training in both sculpture and painting. She builds the surface and gouges it away as she works to find the beauty in true thought and action. The surface of her artwork then becomes a geographical, archaeological site with covered and uncovered layers of meaning and intention, memory and discovery and specific site and interior mind.
Smith earned both an MFA and MA in sculpture/ceramics and painting from San Jose State University and a BFA in paining from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has been on the faculty of Monterey Peninsula College since 1989.

- Jim Scoppettone and Family
James Scoppettone's contribution to contemporary American Impressionism has been recognized by collectors and curators throughout the world. Prestigious public and private art collections including American Pharmaceuticals, Nissin Foods of Japan, Pepsi Cola, the collections of numerous entertainers and CEOs, and the St Louis Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota, feature Scoppettone's unique interpretations of traditional themes and subject matter.
Inspired by the work and writings of nineteenth-century French and American painters, Scoppettone has devoted his career to expanding the artistic exploration of light. Scoppettone combines concepts developed by the impressionist masters with his own talents and vision to create paintings that are distinguished by brilliant color and vibrant brushwork. Capturing the poetry of sunlight's subtle nuances, Scoppettone's work radiates with the energy and joy of light.
