- Notes from Santa Cruz: The County's Musical History and Compositions: Contemporary Artists
Guest curated by Frank Perry. Through historic photographs, sheet music, records, instruments and other musical memorabilia, this exhibition shows what has kept Santa Cruzans humming, dancing, singing and clapping their hands over the past 150 years. Was "When It's Apple Picking Time in Watsonville" (1913) a toe tapper or a dud? You be the judge.
Notes from Santa Cruz will be in one half of the Solari Gallery. The other half will exhibit Compositions: Contemporary Artists. Curated by Marla Novo, Compositions: Contemporary Artists presents recent work by Carlos Dye, Pete Saporito, Robbie Schoen, Chris Tedesco, and Chadwick Gibson. These artists have been inspired by music and musical instruments.

featuring Ernie Watts and Ethel String Quartet with the Laurence Hobgood Trio
Tickets: $25/Adv $28/Door
… soaring vocal flights… he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz. –Washington Post
When the Chicago Jazz Festival asked him to reiterate the music of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Kurt Elling was happy to oblige (on the condition that he be granted artistic license to “do it his own way.”) The master vocalist set to work enlisting a string quartet to accommodate his vision. He has since incorporated reed-man Ernie Watts into a trio lead by his long-time accomplice Laurence Hobgood. This appearance features Watts (sax, flute), Hobgood (piano), Rob Amster (bass) and Kobie Watkins (drums), an intimate appetizer for a big stage orchestra performance at Monterey Jazz Festival in September.
