For beginners and dabblers, this block printing workshop will delight and surprise you when you create a unique handmade set of art prints and cards. Invite your mom, daughter, friend, sister or partner!

Please register in advance online here.

In this workshop, we will:

  • learn how to transfer a drawing onto a softkut rubber block
  • safely carve out the negative space (what will stay white) of a drawing
  • learn how to mix and roll ink onto your printing block
  • pull 8×10″ prints and 5×7″ cards from your relief blocks

The following supplies are included:

  • Speedball linoleum cutting tools
  • Speedball rolling brayers
  • water soluble printmaking ink in multiple colors
  • 4×6″ Softkut rubber carving block
  • 5 sheets of Strathmore printmaking paper in lightweight and heavyweight thickness and 3 pieces of A7 flat cardstock with envelope (*Feel free to bring your own color/type of paper if you want to make more.)

You can bring:

  • your own drawing or design in two colors (black/white). You’re welcome to bring any design, but Joan will have images for you to draw inspiration from. As we are limited on time, try to choose a design that is not too complex.
  • an apron or clothes you don’t mind getting water-soluble ink on
  • short sleeves or sleeves that you can roll up
  • creative confidence!

You will go home with:

  • a 4×6″ Softkut rubber carving block carved with your own design
  • 5 custom 8×10″ art prints and 3 cards made by you!

Whether you are new to block printing or are looking to further your practice, this is an amazing outlet for your creativity. In this express 3-hour workshop, we will be using soft rubber carving blocks called ‘Softkut’ which are gentle on the hands and wrists. Plus, all attendees will be entered into a raffle to win a Speedball Printmaking Starter Kit!

Please email Joan with questions, or if you want her to help to reduce your image into two colors or the appropriate size. She will email all registrants prior to the workshop with more information.
