Details
Revive your old shirt or decorate a favorite tank with your own block print design! Design and carve printing blocks and produce textile patterns in this express workshop. Take simplified shapes that you carve and turn them into a print to be repeated on the fabric you bring. It's eco-conscious and a wonderful way to personalize your wardrobe. Continue when you go home as your block can be reused on paper as well.
In this workshop, we will:
- learn how to make a block stamps out of Softkut Rubber by cutting and carving
- design and plan out your pattern or composition, using simple and bold shapes
- understand how to prep fabric, ink and press onto your textile
- print and stamp your designs using Speedball Fabric Block Printing Ink
- Ooh and Aah
- The following supplies are included:
- Speedball linoleum cutting tools
- Speedball soft rubber rolling brayers
- Speedball Fabric Block Printing ink in multiple colors
- one 4x6" Softkut rubber carving block, which can be cut up to make several shapes to repeat
- paper, scissors, tracing paper, tape for the designing phase
- several pre-cut shapes designed by the instructor to add to your designs
- collection of sample designs to draw inspiration from
Please bring:
- one pre-washed fabric item you'd like to print on.
- It can be an old shirt, tank top, handkerchief, apron, denim, etc. It should be a smooth fabric that does not possess a heavy texture or stretch. Cotton, linen, broadcloth and denim are examples of ideal fabrics for use. Nylon and canvas are not recommended for use with Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks, but if you bring them the inks will be more faded.

- an apron or clothes you don't mind getting ink on
- short sleeves or sleeves that you can roll up
- creative confidence!
You will go home with:
- beautifully embellished clothing or fabric, printed and designed by you!

This class is appropriate for individuals 12 years and up. We will be using some sharp objects, but not too much of the time. Please use your discretion when signing up a child, knowing the skill required to use sharp objects. Your fabric will need to dry overnight, which we will expedite with a hair-dryer so you can take it home, however it will still need 4-7 days of drying before you are able to wash it. About the artist: JOAN BOGART
Joan Pranata Bogart is an illustrator and block printmaker who draws inspiration from nature, especially botanicals and wildlife. She has drawn for almost all of La Tourangelle's gourmet oil labels. It was after working at a tech company for 11 years that she switched gears to practice more art. She grew increasingly addicted to relief printmaking, mostly carving from linoleum and soft rubber surfaces as printing blocks, and finding a peaceful place for creativity and focus to intersect. Her recent prints resemble Indonesian Batik in design and form. She is thrilled to be a part of the Santa Cruz art community with access to nature and creativity. Joan has a BA in Art Practice from University of California, Berkeley and practices printmaking in her backyard art studio in Santa Cruz where she lives with her husband and three young kids.
