Add a creative handmade touch to your gifts this holiday season. Learn how to carve and print your own custom stamps to create patterns on a gift bag, journal cover, card and envelope, gift tags* and wrapping paper*! All skill levels welcome, ages 14+.
In this workshop, we will:
- learn how to transfer a design onto a Speedy Carve rubber block size 4x4"
- safely carve out the negative space (what will stay paper-color) of your 1-color design
- use your carved block to stamp onto your own set of kraft paper gift items
- play with patterns or keep your design minimal to create a variety of decorated stationery
- use an archival ink pad to apply color onto your carved block for stamping
- hand print a gorgeous collection of 1 journal, 1 quality gift bag, 1 folded card and envelope
- *hand print any additional paper goods that you'd like to bring yourself (wrapping paper, additional cards, gift tags, etc)
The following supplies are included:
- Speedball linoleum cutting tools
- 4x4" Speedball Speedy Carve carving block
- tracing paper, pencils, rulers for sketching
- Ranger Archival Inks in multiple colors
- 1 Moleskin Cahier journal (in gray or kraft brown) 8.5x5"
- 1 high quality kraft paper gift bag 8.3" x 3.1" x 10.6"
- 1 A7 folded card and envelope
- image inspiration for you to trace or draw free-hand
You can bring:
- *additional paper goods you'd like to decorate with your hand carved stamp (gift tags, wrapping paper, cards, etc)
- option to bring a simple image, shape, design for inspiration. The activity can be loose if the blocks are stamped in a repeated fashion, or it can be an image that is carved and stamped once. Your choice!
- a fun desire to get creative and use your hands!
- the inks from the stamp pads are permanent so wear clothing - you wont mind accidentally getting ink on
You will go home with:
- your own hand-carved block
- 1 Moleskin Cahier journal size 8.5x5" decorated by you
- 1 high quality kraft gift bag decorated by you
- 1 folded brown kraft folded A7 card and envelope decorated by you
- **Ranger Archival Ink (in black) and additional journals, gift bags and cards/envelopes will be available for purchase in the workshop.
- a fun opportunity to learn and make something for yourself or to gift this holiday season, and the foundation to make more on your own!

Unlike in Joan's previous block printing workshops, this class will be using permanent ink pads for stamping your carved Speedy Carve rubber blocks. She also teaches other block printing workshops using water soluble printmaking inks and roller brayers for making art prints. Contact her to inquire about future workshops if you are interested in that as well. Please email Joan with questions or if you want help simplifying your design. She will email you a week prior to the workshop with more information about the class.
JOAN BOGART
Joan Pranata Bogart is an illustrator and block printmaker who draws inspiration from nature, especially botanicals and wildlife. She has drawn for almost all of La Tourangelle's gourmet oil labels. It was after working at a tech company for 11 years that she switched gears to practice more art. She grew increasingly addicted to relief printmaking, mostly carving from linoleum and soft rubber surfaces as printing blocks, and finding a peaceful place for creativity and focus to intersect. Her recent prints resemble Indonesian Batik in design and form. She is thrilled to be a part of the Santa Cruz art community with access to nature and creativity. Joan has a BA in Art Practice from University of California, Berkeley and practices printmaking in her backyard art studio in Santa Cruz where she lives with her husband and three young kids.
