If you’re feeling like you’ve had a bad bump on the head and don’t recognize your surroundings, you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not in Kansas anymore. In the cyclone of times that feels deliberately designed to mesmerize, shock and disorient us, it’s seductively easy to let ourselves fall asleep in the poppies and hope the flying monkeys don’t come for us next. But what to do in times like this?

In an uplifting response to current, admittedly challenging conditions, The 418 Project is launching a year-long series of free “ally events” where all are invited to take part, meet folks from underserved--and in all too many cases these days, endangered--groups, and learn about new ways to be empowered and make a difference.

The Emerald Ball, Friday, April 25, is the kick-off of the series. 418 Project’s Executive Director Laura Bishop declares, “All this started when two of our trans contributing artists, Dual Demons, came to us, sharing their fears for their physical safety. Transgendered people’s travel documents are being confiscated, others are losing their employment, health care, even their housing. We (The 418 Project) knew we needed to do more. Since we’re blessed to own our very large event space downtown, and our mission centers around serving our community of communities, we realized; it’s time to put this all together, have a convergence and make a measurable difference.”
