Details
Learn how to paint simple leaf patterns in gouache on paper. Gouache is similar to watercolor but is opaque, and colors can be layered on top of one another. Experimentation will be encouraged in this workshop and all skill levels are welcome!
In this workshop, we will:
- learn basic gouache painting and color mixing techniques.
- receive step-by-step instruction on how to layer dark colors on light colors and light colors on dark colors.
- experiment with painting a houseplant pattern on paper.
- learn how to turn a pattern on paper into a paper tile pattern which can be repeated and used to create unique papers, fabrics, and other products.
The following supplies are included:
- paper
- paintbrushes of various sizes
- communal sets of gouache paint
- pencils and pens
- xacto knives
- water containers
- paper towels
- palettes
- tape
- rulers
You can bring:
- a houseplant (or two!) for painting inspiration AND/OR
- printed photos of plant leaves (or real leaves) for inspiration (or bring a digital device containing these photos)
You will go home with:
- at least one 8 x 8" paper "tile" with their repeating leaf pattern painting

About the Artist:
LOGAN PARSONS
Logan Parsons was born and raised in Pacific Grove, California. She received her bachelor's degree in environmental science from Western Washington University and the following year obtained her graduate certificate in science illustration from the University of California Extension, Santa Cruz. Upon graduation she completed internships at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA and at Scientific American magazine in New York City. Most recently, she taught art and design at York School in Monterey, Ca. Nature has always been the primary influence in Logan's art; capturing the character of its many odd, funny, and beautiful organisms. She especially loves plants (and growing them), and houseplants in particular! When given the opportunity to learn a new way to make art, she jumps at the chance, and loves to pass on what she has learned to her students. Logan now lives and works as a full time mom and freelance illustrator in Santa Cruz. She continues to seek out new artistic experiences and tends to her indoor and outdoor gardens on a daily basis.
