Details
With deep roots in the Afro-Cuban folkloric tradition, Los Hermanos Arango have developed a style entwining modern jazz harmony and improvisation over a highly rhythmic battery of bata drums and African percussion instruments. The core of the ensemble features the virtuoso talents of brothers Feliciano Arango on bass, Ignacio on guitar, Eugenio on percussion, and their sister Cristina on vocals. Filling out the group are the able talents of pianist Julio Valdes and percussionist Victor Tapia. Their latest album is called Bendita Guanabacoa.
The Arangos grew up in Guanabacoa, Cuba, an area rich in Afro-Cuban musical heritage. Feliciano is a former student of bass legend Cachao and has played with Chucho Valdés, David Murray, and Maraca. Eugenio, a longtime associate of singer Pablo Milantes, is greatly respected as a percussionist and professor at La Escuela Nacional de Arte, in Havana. Ignacio has performed with Arturo Sandoval, Karl Denson, and Paquito de Rivera, among others. Cristina is a wonderful vocalist and interpreter of African dance.
Formed in 2003, Los Hermanos Arango’s raison d’etre is fusing the Afro-Cuban tradition with the aesthetic of contemporary jazz. To date, the Arangos have six albums and two documentaries to their name.
