Jared Gampel is the resident DJ and co-founder of People’s Disco, an all-vinyl socialist dance party founded in 2016 and based in Santa Cruz, California. He received his PhD in the History of Consciousness Dept. at UC Santa Cruz in September 2023. His dissertation, Listening for History: Studies on Retro and the Temporalities of Popular Music, examines why we are listening to more “old” music than ever before and how transformations in the music industry fueled the rise of retro cultures and musical revivals. Gampel teaches four courses at UCSC: Understanding Popular Music, Introduction to Marxism, International and Global Perspectives, and Learning to DJ. He is a union organizer with the American Federation of Teachers and a member of Democratic Socialists of America.
