Jim Payne, labeled the “Buddy Rich or Billy Cobham of funk drumming” by JazzTimes Magazine, has had a long career as a drummer, educator, producer, and collaborator with some of the finest musicians in funk, jazz, and R&B. Payne is a member of the online faculty at Berklee College of Music and has performed with artists such as Maceo Parker, Fred Weskley, Michael Brecker, and others. In this master class, Payne will play R&B and funk clips and show how the drumming vocabulary has developed, as well as ideas on how to develop techniques to play the various elements heard. Payne will also play several tunes, analyze them and field questions from the audience.
