Ranky Tanky, South Carolina’s global Gullah cultural ambassadors and Billboard chart-toppers making “soulful honey to the ears” (NPR), have released their new album, Good Time. After weeks of teasing new music and releaseing a pair of EPs this summer, the five-piece group brings it all home on Good Time. “Gullah” comes from West African languages and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely to “work it” of “get funky”. In this spirit, this Charleston, South Carolina quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the music roots of Charleston are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown.
