Learn to sew your own clothes and begin building a handmade capsule wardrobe! If you have always wanted to sew your own garments but didn't know where to start, this class is just what you need. In this 4 week course, you will learn how to use a commercial pattern, choose the right fabric for your project and construct a beautiful top or dress or both. (Beyond this Part 1 class, there will be other classes for learning how to make pants and other capsule wardrobe staples.)
In this class, local sewist Julie Gires will guide you through the multiple steps involved in garment making: familiarizing yourself with sewing patterns and how to use them, using the fabulous Cielo top and dress by Closet Case patterns; taking a fun trip to our local fabric store (Harts Fabrics) to learn everything about textiles and how to select the right fabric for your project; learning how to take your measurements and cut fabric accordingly; and finally, learning the basics of garment construction by making your very own version of the Cielo. Top, dress, long or short sleeves, your choice!
Please note that you will need to purchase the pattern and fabric from Harts (about $50 cost of materials), and you will need to bring your own sewing machine and be comfortable using it for very basic seams. Alternatively, please email info@allhandsworkshops.com if you would like to reserve of one the few machines we have available.
Class will meet Friday nights Nov 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd, plus Sat Nov 2nd at 9:30am for our trip to the fabric store.
Class Meeting Dates: 4 Fridays 7-9pm + 1 Sat 9:30am field trip
Nov 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd, plus Sat Nov 2nd morning field trip
About the artist: JULIE GIRES
Julie was born and raised in France, where she pursued a carrier in education and science for more than ten years. She taught herself to sew after moving to the US seven years ago, and started building her handmade wardrobe in 2016. She is the mom of two adorable monsters who keep her on her toes, and she is grateful for this practice that allows her to create, grow and take care of herself everyday. Julie truly believes that sewing is a superpower, and that slowly and mindfully building a handmade wardrobe that fits your body, your needs and your tastes is a liberating and empowering process.
