It's Opening Night and Maestro Măcelaru kicks off the Cabrillo Festival '23 season with an evening of West Coast premieres by four critically acclaimed composers with four distinctive musical voices. Sarah Kirkland Snider's Forward into Light is a vivid tribute to American women suffragists. Jennifer Higdon's Duo Duel is a double percussion concerto featuring Svet Stoyanov and Matthew Strauss. Sebastian Currier's Track 8 takes inspiration from Beethoven's Eighth Symphony. Bora Yoon's The Wind of Two Koreas explores the ideas of cultural blood memory and epigenetics while taking inspiration from Stravinsky's early orchestral works.

The evening begins with an outdoor Pre-Concert Talk by Music Director/ Conductor Cristi Măcelaru and guests. A special alfresco dinner will be prepared by Moveable Feast and served outside the Civic Auditorium; advance tickets required for the dinner, the talk is free.
